>>When I catch students doing this, I make them go back to their regular
class
and bring me replacement pencils. One time, a students only extra pencil was
the birthday pencil she got from the school that day. That was hard, but the
problem has stopped. Janet (I teach elementary k-5)<<
I noticed this "pencil breaking phenomenon" for the first time this year. It
was May, and most pencils were nubs...in the Art Room and classroom. I got
out a bunch of brand new ones and sharpened them up and thought it would be
kindof refreshing for the students! It was. But I stared as a third grade
girls sat and broke one after another after another, almost in a trance, and
had to put my hand on her arm to stop her! I asked her "Why in the world
would you do something like that?" but she had no reply! The next time she
came to Art, I gave her the broken pieces. Strange.
