Dear List,
I'm a self-confessed "lurker". I don't usually ask for anything, but I'm
finding myself in a jam with my priorities in a job search. I have been
teaching for two years in the following situation:
-Between two schools, (700 students at one, 800 at the other).
-On a cart at each school.
-Teaching grades 1-5.
-After school art club at each school.
-About $2,000 annual budget at each school.
-No planning or passing periods.
-Anywhere from 30-42 students in each class.
This was my first art job and I obviously didn't know many of the important
questions to ask in that interview. While I now know what my dream job
would be, and I ask all of the questions, I find that many of the jobs miss
one or two of my criterea. I am looking for words of wisdom from any people
that have been in good and bad conditions. What is more important in a
school?
-Administrative support
-Adequate and approprate space for the program
-Budget
-Class sizes
If I have to give something up, which one should it be? Frankly, I have two
jobs that are looking really closely at me, one has an incredible program in
place (and large shoes to fill), but I'm not convinced about the
administrative support. The other has nothing in place, wants to build a
great program, but lacks space, and class sizes are high. The plus to this
one is that administration will give me anything I want (short of space
because it doesn't exist). I am not looking for a majic answer, but rather
some shared reflections from people that have been in both situations.
Thank you everyone! I always get the greatest insight from this list!
