html versus plain text

I have an odd little question for the group. Every now and then I get a
prompt which states that some recipients can't receive html and do I
want send it in plain text and html anyway. Does anyone know whether it
takes up more space to send in both, whether sending it in plain text is
more convenient.
I've decided in the interest of self-improvement to stop pretending to
be a fool.
