Just a suggestion, put a price on the materials. Instead of Johnny broke x
number of pencils or 15 rulers, say Johnny destroyed $ worth of art
equipment and disrupted my class. That bill the librarian sends home has a $
amount on it, do the same.

Subject: busting pencils
SInce we are on the theme of stealing scissors (and I am appalled at some of
your stories and the support parents give to stealing), busting pencils
seemed to be in vogue again this year.
Busting pencils drives me nutty.
Generally I quickly isolate the problem and let that group use itty bitty
pencils until I think they are responsible to handle decent ones...but every
so often it seems to be "cool" again. It's tiresome.
Also I think it is interesting that you can't destroy a book or deface
property on the outside of a building without penalty, but it is perfectly
acceptable to destroy art supplies by some adminstrators. It further
devalues what we do.
