    Nora,
I have the same problem. I ask the students to bring their own scissors, and
, like we were talking about their work, they don't always take them home at
the end of the year, so I have lots and lots of scissors.
At the beginning of last year I bought 30 metal 18" rulers. I made the
mistake of telling the kids how nice they were and how important it was to
take care of them. I had a disruptive student who would attempt to steal or
bend one every few days. I ended up with 10. I wrote him up and sent him to
the office for destroying property, but bending rulers is not high on their
priority list. He got a warning. (grrrrrrrr....). He ended up being put in
alternative, but I will never buy metal rulers again. It's the cheap 18"
    wooden one from now on.
I, too, do not know how to deal with this, because most of the students treat
the supplies with respect, but it only takes one or two who are trying to
"make you mad" to wipe out the supplies.
Any suggestions? Teresa in El Paso
