I have been told that in Texas, if you back out of a signed contract, they
can hold your teaching certificate. I don't know if that is true. I looked on
the contract and it does seem that you can get out of it if you give 30 days
notice. Contracts usually have to be signed in March/April and the job
openings dont really open up until June/July. I have considered changing jobs
just because of the 50 minute commute each way every day, but I love the job
and the other art teacher I work with. I think I'll stay put.
By the way, Texas is always hiring and art teachers are hard to find. This
year they have started paying a bonus of $1,000 -2500. depending on your
field. Starting salary for a new teacher in my area (EL Paso.......the edge
of the known world) is about 26,000.
