I just got a new job, and had already signed a contract to continue my old
job. My principal is treating it as a fairly normal occurrence. Although
both jobs are in the same district, I think that letting him know when I was
applying for the new job enabled him to be better prepared to replace me.
Being honest and straightforward helps. Administrators are people who should
understand that we need to take care of our careers and our lives, and that
sometimes that process sets up sticky situations.
The job I'm now leaving I got at the last minute. My predecessor left during
the last week of August. I had been interviewing all spring and summer with
no success, and my prospects were looking grim. Then I got a call from a
teacher friend of mine who works at this school. On her recommendation I
interviewed the next day and was hired on the spot as the interim art
teacher. I spent a day sorting through piles of crafty s__t in the art
closet, then saw students the next day. The job was posted, and all fall I
interviewed, etc, and was officially hired in October. Good jobs DO
sometimes present themselves at the last minute. Don't give up. Keep your
chin up, and visualize success.
