I teach high school and like to have bigger portfolios, so I have each
student bring in 2 pieces of white poster board at the beginning of school.
They punch holes with the hole punch every inch around three sides and then
they lace them with yarn. The reason I like this better than staples is that
it lasts longer and the staples can get stuck to each other. It takes a
little longer but they will last for more than 1 year.
I have them decorate the outsides. Usually at the beginning of the year I
have them do their name on one side and decorate with patterns. I save the
other side for later in the year, if I have a sub, they can decorate the
other side. It could be done in the style of one of the aistists they have
learned about.
The kids use these all year to store their work. This way they can work
larger. They don't take work home until the end of the year.
I also have them do a portfolio evaluation at the end of the year. They
choose three of their favorite pieces and write about them....what they
learned, successes, challenges, elements and principles used, influenced by,
etc. etc.
This also helps me to learn their names at the beginning of the school years.
While they are decorating the side with their name, I walk around alot and
get to know them.
I keep these in vertical storage slots, but I knew one teacher who stored
them horizontally.
