    Anna,
I have approximately 1000 students (preK-5, 3 schools, no art room). I do
portfolios out of 24x36" paper. I am enteriing my third year this fall. The
first year I did them differently than I did this past year. We made a
vertical fold that was left of center, another fold up about 3", and stapled
the sides of bottom pocket. I kept them in boxes in my closet. This year I
asked each classroom teacher to choose a space in their room to store
portfolios (an empty desk worked well). I simlpified the portfolio and
simply had children fold the paper in half vertically.

Students kept most of their work in the portfolio. Every once in a while I
let them take art works home. The first year I had them choose one work of
art to keep in the portfolio ach quarter. The problem was that they often
took things home that we later wished were there for the art show and other
exhibits. Now I encourage them to keep all the work in school, and I find
    that is working well.

Sculpture is a tough one because my storage space is so limited. One of my
three schools doesn't even have an art closet! I try to document with
disposable cameras since they are easy to carry around when I don't have a
cart to push. The school without the art closet also has no cart! I lug
things around in milk crates, running up and down stairs. 3-D work generally
needs to go home immediately. I try to do sculpure so that I can display it
in the art show (I had one at each school). My goal is to document using the
digital camera more next year (saving me a great deal of $).
I could also keep a disc for each room. The problem is that it is more to
carry and availability (one per school).

My daughters' teacher uses lightweight cardboard folded horizontally and
stapled on the sides to create a pocket. She keeps it for 2 years. This
seems to work well. I might try it in the future. I'd love to hear about
    what you do.
    Kerry
