I tie-dyed 70 t-shirts in April with my first graders...
First , you need to purchase some SODA ASH (usually comes in the dye kits)
found at stores like Micheal's,,,maybe Walmart. The typical Rit dyes just were
not bright enough...... The dye kits come with complete instructions..Much
easier....I did use cotton t's - wet them to get them more flexible..than
tyed them in the various designs...then soak in a warm bath of soda ash (this
fixes the color) for at least 20 minutes...then color..put in plastic
bags..leave overnight..Then rinse out with cool water till they run almost
    clesr..hang to dry.... No problem
    Good Luck artisok
