Hi Roberta,
No I don't teach aboriginal art in my school at all - what I do is take my children to the experts (or vice versa). We have a particularly strong Koori community here in Melbourne (Wurundjeri) and it is considered correct to approach the elders for advice. There are also quite a few (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander) galleries around us which can talk the children through symbolism that is apparent in different groupings. We will probably to to one of these at the start of next term. Most secondary school art teachers I have talked to in Melbourne have told me that they base their lessons more on the history rather than on the practical - maybe this is different in other schools (I had admittedly a small survey group). If you have the time to surf the web here are some sites which may be of interest:
http://www.natsiew.nexus.edu.au
(National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education website)
http://www.abc.net.au/schoolstv/nations/default.htm
(follow any of the excellent links)
http://www.sofweb.vic.edu.au/
(This is the website for the Victorian Education Dept. - many resources but I have not been able to find lesson plans for aboriginal art. Good information on many subjects and some great links to associated schools - such as the Worawa Aboriginal College and Morwell Kode School - website of which is: http://www.kurnai.vic.edu.au/kode/index.htm
If I get any information regarding lessons I will forward to the list. I hope that these will be of assistance.
Gina
