Matisse is excellent for young children. I did a unit with second graders
for "Make a Difference Day" (several years ago--but a good lesson). Students
traced their own hand and used it in the composition (both the positive and
negative shape). They made drawings and tracings of various tools too that
were cut from construction paper. The whole composition was cut construction
paper--on 12x12 square. We used a limited color plan (triad: yellow, red,
blue, white, black--students could add a touch of one complimentary color if
they wished)
When the collage was finished, they wrote how they could make a difference
and help someone else. They also wrote how their composition showed "helping
hands". The unit took two class periods.
The finished composition were used for posters all throughout the school for
"Make a Difference Day"--there was a canned food drive.
