I realize that 44 miles was a long way to travel to graduate school, but it
made me laugh. In Texas we measure distance by time not miles. I just got
back from a Jazz meeting. It is not unusual for someone from Midland to
drive to San Angelo (2 hours one way) attend a Jazz concert till 11:00 pm
and drive back to Midland. People from San Angelo will go to Midland for a
night out and drive back to San Angelo the same night and these are 2 lane
blacktop Highways 70 miles an hour and lots of deer. (Personally I think
they are crazy)
BTW the Cactus Jazz Festival is September 6th - September 9th Events and
Artists
Wednesday Harvey Herbert Blues Contest at Graham's Central Station (time is
not firm depends on number of entries will end at 10:30 because of noise
ordinance) -FREE
Thursday 5:30 - 7:30 Opening of Duke Ellington Exhibit (traveling from
Smithsonian continues to the end of the month) Free @ SAMFA Calvin Owens
Blues Orchestra 8:00 - 10:30 $15 at Graham's Central Station
Friday LaVerne Butler Quartet Cactus Hotel doors open at 7:00 Reserved
seating $15 I think
Saturday Local JH & HS Jazz Bands and Visual art activities for elementary
students (2-4 tenatively) free at the Pasao, Extended hours at SAMFA for the
exhibit $2.00 per person with lots of discounts for military, students,
seniors (10 - 8), End of Festival Concert River Stage tickets I can't
remember the price but inexpensive lots of kids, families sit on a hill
listen to music see the river behind. There is a concession stand but you
can bring a picnic but no alcohol TABC rules (performers winner of the
Harvey Herbert Blues Contest, John Adams Quartet with guest artist Marvin
Stamm, and The University of North Texas Jazz Repertory Ensemble) Gates open
at 6 performances start 6:45 end 11:00 all Saturday venues within walking
distance of each other.
The Fort Concho National Historic Landmark will be having The Buffalo
Soldier Exhibit from the collection of Anthony L. Powell I don't know the
times though.
The Jazz musicians will see every JH and HS band, choral, and music student
in SAISD and provisions are in place to include private school students in
the workshops and school concert. This is a big leap forward for us.
Cultural Affairs, the Museum, Fort, and School district working together.
Hopefully we will be able to do something similar with visual arts soon.

Since we've been talking miles to school. I drive 11 miles to and from
school. It is on a busy route with lots of lights so sometime it takes 30
min.! It's 15-20 on a good day.
. . And speaking of grad. school. The closest school that had a masters
in painting was 44 miles away from my house! At one point I was driving
there three nights a week, after work, and getting home past midnight. I
don't miss that!
