Betty,
I had my students use the English Dept's binder two years ago to make
sketchbooks. It was kind of a pain: I precut all the covers
(posterboard), backing (cardboard from soda flats), and sketch paper. I
had the students assemble their sketchbooks and cut the holes for the
combs, then put the combs on. One machine for 30 students, some of them
clueless because they didn't listen or watch the demo, so they screwed
theirs up and wanted more materials; it took a couple of periods to get
them all done. Meanwhile, of course, the ones who were done first had
to be kept busy. It's not all that easy to put the papers on the combs;
we couldn't just slide the whole sketchbook on and then close the comb.
It usually had to be done in sections. Later in the semester, when
students had to add more paper, I had to locate the binder in the
English Dept. The students wanted to add the new paper to the back of
the sketchbook, of course, which meant having to remove _all_ the
previous papers first. By that time, some were pretty ragged and didnt'
want to go back on very easily. Needless to say, I didn't use it for
sketchbooks again.
