Hi everyone: check out this website

to see some information about advocating for the arts - about the NAEP
art
Assessment, about Arts:Literacy for a Changing America, and SCASS (State
Collaboration on Assessment and Student Standards).
Below (from the website) is an excerpt from a speech by William Ivey of
the
National Endowment for the Arts.
Ivey: "There are two kinds of evidence: evidence of accomplishment and
need,
and evidence of impact,
transformations, modifications in the lives of young citizens and
families.
Your Arts Endowment has been involved in gathering both kinds of
evidence:
The Nation's Report Card tells us that creativity -- the ability
to
connect and convey disparate ideas
and emotions -- can be nurtured and taught.
It also tells us that a comprehensive, sequential education in
the
arts improves the creative skills of
our children.
As Secretary Riley discussed... in his speech, a new report,
Champions of Change,
research conducted by respected scholars, confirms the critical
role
the arts play in our children's
overall education.
Gaining the Arts Advantage, an unprecedented study of 92
arts-based
school districts, has
identified critical success factors -- in both policy and
practice --
that result from placing the arts at
the center of our schools on a system-wide basis.
Findings from YouthArts, a 3-year study of young people in or on
the
fringes of the juvenile
justice system, were astounding. Behavior and grades improved.
Delinquency dropped.
These studies -- and others like them -- provide us with evidence to
build
upon our vision, argue societal
need, and "make our case" to school boards and other policy makers."

quote)
