I sure hope that I didn't come across as defensive in my posting . If I did I'm
sorry. I'm not right or wrong, it's just IMHO. If I knew everthing I sure
wouldn't of been on this listserve for almost 3 years. I think of teaching as a
life- long learning situation. Even though I've worked with kids for some 20+
years I feel there is so much more to learn. and reading yours and many other
opinions helps give me ideas for my classes.
The one thing that does concern me at times is the overconcern of self- esteem(
boy, i hope that came out right). Like someone posted recently , Bill Gates list
of "11 things I didn't learn in school", one of them states that your boss in the
"real" world isn't going to concerned if you feel good about yourself. I
remember hearing about some research in the news last year that a group of people
who have some of the best self- esteem are prisoners-interesting.
Anyhow in relating that to sketching ( I'm getting there), I feel I need choose
assignments that will provide my student the best opportunity to expand their
drawing skills. And to realize that at middle school they aren't often making
the best decisions. So I'm going concentrate on guiding them instead of them
creating a personal refection . Well that is how I feel now, heck maybe next year
I'l be modifying again. Good luck to all of you as we continue this summer to
search out new ideas for our classes.
