Holly,
I'd check out the library for catalogs of museum and gallery exhibitions as
well as sketchbooks, ask for inter-library loans - check out the internet -
there's a site for Da Vinci's drawings I'm sure - he has a combination of
anatomy sketches and his imaginary machines...and his writings which were in
a mirror script...Dale Chilhully has a web site of his glass work and
drawings...
Other artists: Cartier Bresson stopped doing photography to sketch full
time, David Hockney's drawings are incredible, Picasso kept extensive
sketchbooks throughout his life to work out 2-D and 3-D problems, and don't
forget Women and African American artists. Also, architects...theatre, set
and costume designers - Julie Taymor did the costume and set designs for
Disney's Broadway show "The Lion King" based on animals and African Art that
are really something. What about car designers?
If kids see that real live "artists" keep sketchbooks, it might help them to
understand why they're helpful and what the Artists use them for.
