Sometimes I get so bogged down with the IEPs, the failing kids with failure
of parents, the administrative demands, the attitudes.... that I forget
there are some very good kids out there.
Last night I attended the Senior Awards ceremony. We recognized all kinds
of achievements. A "5th year senior" who has over come alcoholism and
raised his GPA from .3 to 2.91, a young lady now married with a baby who was
abused by her father (chained to a bed and fed urine) who, even though she
hated every minute of it, saw the importance of getting her high school
diploma. As well as all the very smart and competent kids whose lists of
activities makes one wonder how they can do it all.
After a night like that --- yes it is worth it.
And when former graduates come back, especially the ones who hardly made a
dent in your memory, and thank you for something you gave them --- yes it is
worth it.
Only we know how very hard this job is. There is very little immediate
gratification. But then only we know it feels to have touched a life.
A hug from a student is the best --- yes it is worth it.
(even when all I can do is whine)
