Exactly. Type ornaments were the first clip art. I have a couple of type
cases full of them and still try to rescue them (the real ones) when I can
before they're glued into type cases around somebody's wood type initials
for their den wall.
Now many of those same images are available with font packages or as clip
art, though I have never seen any printed with the clarity of inked lead in
direct contact with good paper at correct pressure. Just as in copying &
tracing, it isn't the process or material itself that is right or wrong,
it's how we use it.
