I'm about as right-brained as you can get and an almost totally
visual/tactile learner (ask anyone)...yet...I vividly remember learning
1-pt. in 5th grade during the Glacial Age and I was the ONLY person in the
classroom who "saw it" easily. That's why I got to wear the "art pin" all
week. I couldn't understand why my classmates couldn't do it. This belies,
to me, the fact that its mostly left-brain but then again, it being
considered by most to be left-brained explains why a few of my more
advanced art students cannot see it readily. One fact defies the other.
I also find it interesting that some of you teach it in early elementary so
that when your kids reach middle school, they've had some experience. I'm
in California. We haven't had elem. art offered in years in our county or
others due to proposition cuts. They generally come to me in 6th grade for
only a 7-week stretch with NO art background other than with generalists.
With a hunger for the basics and a time limit, there's no way I'm going to
introduce perspective drawing to these kids and set them up for a possibly
bad art experience the first go-'round.
I DO wish we had elem. art as I think it's crying shame these kids can't
benefit from an early art program other than volunteer parents. Sure would
make MY job a little easier. Would you believe that there are more people
in the field of the arts in California than there are doctors and lawyers?
Kinda makes you think, hummm?
Anyway...back to my question. Does anyone see a trend of some artistically
gifted students having a harder time with perspective than general
population of kids? Toodles.....
