I love this thread. My mother was not a trained teacher, nor a
professional artist. But she was always "making stuff." We got crayons,
paste, scissors, tools, etc. as a "suitcase present" every Christmas. We
had buckets of papier mache pulp in the kitchen of our apartment. We made
placemats for our grandparents by coloring on muslin, then ironing over
them. We decorated cookies--too ugly to eat, and mom helped us with
costumes for our backyard plays. There was so much more, but she was
our inspiration. The best teachers inspire more than instruct. My
brother and I both became artist-teachers.
By the way, this creative lady was self educated--read all the
classics, got her GED at 50, and then went to nursing school.
Sorry if I got sappy--I miss her and hope I gave my kids what she gave
me.
