interdisciplinary 50's

This year I will be working with a sixth grade team on their
interdisciplinary unit America in the 50's. I would like your help
brainstorming a list of atrists/architects that are well known for their
work from that period.
Also I will be working with the same team on their unit on survival....this
one really has me stumped....except that I know that they will be working
on a play which may lend itself to props and play scenery. They will also
be working on some map making skills. They will read Hatchet. I think they
plan to make commercials to sell survival equipment. Any good ideas on how
to relate a survival unit to the world of art? Thanks
