I often use the same type of lesson, but have two other styles, too.
Sometimes, the assignment is very unstructured. For example, once we
read a book about a dream and students simply had to draw the most
wonderful or happiest dream they had. Students who finished then could
draw a nightmare. So this is an unstructured lesson where they should
answer their own questions. I still walk around and look, but on my
rounds I may straighten up the paint bottles.
Another style might be even to the other extreme, even more structured.
For instance, when making origami, students have to follow step by
step. Everyone needs to be on the same fold at the same time. Maybe
if your bosses saw a lesson like that which can be really exasperating,
they would realize that walking around the room is really a pleasure.
I read somewhere that student should have a range in the freedom or
structure of lessons: from pure exploration through teacher guided
lessons all the way to step by step skills. I try to do that in my
