I like the idea of balance in a room. In fact I drive my husband
nuts if I'm around a picture which is off balance, I just have to
fix it.Of course stepping over all the clothes on the floor to get

babbling brooks and waterfalls, since we are speaking environment.
Why not have a room without furniture at all. I remember my first
day of college. Everyone started out in Foundations- a large
building with one giant room. everyone met inside and decided who
they were going to have as an instructor. the walls were moveable as
well as removable. There were four instructors in the morning, 4 in
they each taught something different. The large room was split into
four large rooms. One instructor taught a class
called-"collaborative construction" we made environments and inside
this room we had so many weeks to make a dwelling out of anything-
but it had to be found material. One room was an animation room, one
was painting color theory. They lasted 5 weeks and then changed. I
still have the workshop info if anyone is interested. It's from 1980
and I only have the second semester info unfortunately.
Another idea is to have your students break into groups and create
something for their environment. Or have each class make something
different. Chairs out of branches, fresco's, stained glass,
fountains, ponds, sculpture- soft and hard, ceramic columns, mummy
cases- the options are countless. You might have them visit a
children's museum or parks and see how they dealt with dwellings.
