re: sewing through cardboard?

Do you find that they have trouble going through all those layers? My
HS kids had trouble sewing through 4 layers of copy paper. I can't
imagine my little ones pressing hard enough with those dull needles to
go through the cardboard. Maybe I'm not getting it?
