Hi Sue and all --
I have for years had my third graders embroider and sew pouches from
burlap. We use the large, dull steel needles with large eyes and 3 or 4
ply yarn. It's quite a challenge for some of them to thread their needles
and tie their knots (especially the ones they need to tie when they're done
with a color or seam). We work on these for about 8 - 10 sessions, and
most can do fairly well, re: motor skills. But this is a very basic
project. If you do something with sewing, you may spend a lot of tiime
coaching and having kids peer helping. They really do seem to enjoy the
sewing a lot, though -- many high schoolers tell me they still have their
pouches!

-- ah, bliss!
