Edward Hicks "Peaceable Kingdom" was self taught as well. The fact that he
painted Peaceable Kingdom 63 times fascinates the kids. I like to use this
image and artist in a discussion about the contrasts in the painting. Animals
that eat each other are coexisting in the image, etc. The kids then create an
imaginary place where conflicting nouns coexist. Brainstorming on the board
gets many ideas sparked. They love to talk and share this work with others.
