Hi Lai,
I do a whole unit on Folk Art for my art one (high school)
students. I give them the defination that folk art is art created by
untrained artists. I tell them that they are all Folk Artists at this
point (they have not had art in the elementary and only a little in middle
school). It gives them the ok to create without worrying about drawing
skills and style. We look at North American folk artists and local
examples of folk art and then they create a visual story about themselves
that they can leave for their grandchildren. Later we study folk art toys
and they work in pairs and create a folk art toy. After this we begin
studying drawing from life and the rest of art one.
