Dear colleagues,

Several of you were interested in what kind of rubric I use in my classroom,
so I'm sending an example to the list, for anyone who wants it.

A rubric is simply a guide for students and teachers to use so that the
expectations for any given activity are clear. The rubric, organized in any
way that works for the teacher (and students), outlines specifically what
the student will achieve in order to demonstrate that they are learning.
The way a rubric is structured is a personal decision based on the needs of
the particular situation, so my rubric could be different than others you
may have seen. Consider it an example not "The Example" of a rubric.

Since I can't set up the way the rubric really looks, I will do my best to
describe this general rubric. The top of the page is titled "Project
Evaluation Sheet" and there's a place for the title of the activity

On the left side, I have listed what the student needs to accomplish. These
accomplishments are organized in four sections: General Expectations,
Productivity, Specific Expectations, and Goes Beyond. Gen. Exp. and Prod.
always stay the same, but I have left spaces to add to them if I choose.

Under Gen. Exp., I have listed: Craftsmanship, Follow Dir., Tool and
Material Management, and Work Complete and On Time.
Under Productivity, I have listed: Use Time Wisely, Keep Work Space Neat,
Responsible Use of Materials, and Courtesy.

Specific Expectations and Goes Beyond, address the particular needs of the
lesson.

The right side consists of three columns split verically, with horizontal
lines corresponding with the expectations crossing through. My grading
system is simply +, /, - (btw, not my choice), and these symbols head the
top of the columns. Plus means skilled, check means satisfactory, and minus
means the work (or item) needs to be redone or revised.

The bottom of the rubric has a place for comments, theirs and mine, and a
spot for the grade. The grade is based on the number of +, /, and - in the
chart.
