The book "When Art Became Fashion, (Kosode in Edo Period Japan)" is
fantastic. It's by Dale Carolyn Gluckman and Sharon Sadako Takeda, and
published by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. 352 pages long with
great pictures and all the history. It was sold to go along with their
exhibit of the same name in 1993 ( I think, or '94). I'm sure you could get
a copy from them or the Japanese Pavillion, which is part of LACMA.
