Computer Grading Software Search

I am a 42 year old college senior majoring in Art Education (the big
career change) and I am taking a course in the fall that is called
"Educational Technology and Computer Literacy" and I am wondering if any
of you in the field can help with a few things.

Does anyone have any experience with computerized grading/assessment
software? Or do most educators use spreadsheet programs like Lotus? Our
professor wants us to become familiar with Microsoft Works. Is this a
popular program among educators? I consider myself to be a pretty
advanced computer user and a program like Works seems to be sort of a
junior version of Microsoft Office. I would actually be going backwards
to learn it.

What I would like to find is a program specifically written for
teachers to grade and then adapt the functions and cell formulas to a
program like Lotus Approach or access. Where would I look for such a
program (ideally just a demo version?) Any help is greatly appreciated.
