where are the new leaders for arts ed going to come from

Arts education has always been dependent on those rare people who will step
forward and speak out in support of the arts being included as a part of
the core of every childs educational experience. Being a leader in the
visual arts, music, theatre/drama and dance means countless hours of
attending meetings, working for the state and national organizations and
orgnanizing strong and pointed advocacy messages that hopefully will make a
difference with parent groups, school boards, administrators, legislators
and all of the related bodies that are planning the future for education
while we are in the classroom doing our jobs.

The question I am working on centers on just where the leaders of tomorrow
are going to come from. I am looking for models of leadership training
programs for arts educators that are being used today. Models that are
aimed at developing a strong leadership cadre of elementary and secondary
teachers for disciplined based arts organizations in each state and
locality. I am looking for models that will focus on engaging leaders in
all of the arts disciplines.

In Iowa several of us are looking to begin an acadamy for the development
of leadership skills for all arts educators whereby they can learn what is
needed to become an effective leader at the local and state level. We feel
that all of the organiztions that support arts education will be strengthened.

I would appreciate knowing how to get in touch of those people who have
worked with business and industry in an attempt to set up leadership programs.
