Hi. I used the book "Screamers" to influence my 5th graders and we
modified it. We made snakes or surpents. We used 1 wire and padded it
with newspaper and tape coiling it however we liked. We used folded
mattboard for the mouths (padding it again) and taped it onto the
snake. We made eyeballs and "U" shaped fangs out of white clay which I
fired before we began the project. These were taped on top of the head
and the fangs into the mouths. WE paper mached ALL several layers. We
painted them many colors and used fluffs, felt tongues on pipecleaners
to stand out, etc. They were fantastic!!! and I hung all of them from
the corner of the ceiling down the hall so that they coiled out from the
wall. The first graders named it the "valley of the snakes" and I hung
"The Scream" near the sign.

It was a simplified version of "The Screamers" and we thought that some
of the Kindergartners would be afraid to walk down the hall but they
were in awe.

Some kids got carried away and bought fake mice and glued them into
their mouths with red paint. Very effective but I had to hang them in a
less obvious place.

A great project. Now how do I top that next year.

Good luck. Give it a try.
