Dear Artsednet Subscribers:

Not long ago, I wrote a message directed at those of you who are
California residents. I would like to alert you all once more to
important legislation pending in our State Senate. Assembly Speaker pro
Tempore Sheila Kuehl from Santa Monica has intrduced a bill, Assembly
Bill 365, to require all high school student to take a year of art and a
year of foreign language instead of being able to opt for one or the
other, effectively allowing both subjects to be marginalized in the high
school curriculum. AB 365 will bring arts and foreign language int o the
core curriculum for all students. It is more important now than ever to
send letters of support since the bill may fail passage in the Senate.

I invite each of you to write letters in support of this bill to your
Assemblymember, your Senator, and particularly to Governor Pete
Wilson. Our Governor does not believe that arts education for all
students is the best way to expose kids to the arts, but I disagree. If
you would like to write a letter but do not know who your represenatives
are, I can provide that information to you if you send me e-mail with
your city and zip code. Below, you will find the way to address your
envelope (a room number is helpful, but not necessary. i can provide
that to you as well however). Thank you for your attention to this
appeal. I hope that California residents will do all they can to bring
arts education to every student. Thank you.

You can send letters to:

Honorable (Insert name of Assemblymember or Senator)
State Capitol Building, Room (Insert number)
Sacramento, California
95814

Governor Pete Wilson
State Capitol Building, First Floor
Sacramento, California
95814

When you write a letter, please, send a copy of it to me by mail or fax
so that I can forward it to the appropriate people at each stage of our
continuing effort. My phone number is 916-445-4956. The fax number is
916-324-4454. The address is:
Honorable Sheila James Kuehl
State Capitol Building, Room 3160
Sacramento, CA 95814
Attn: Nicole C. King

THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR WORK IN THE ARTS. I HOPE THAT EACH OF YOU WILL
SUPPORT AB 365 AND HELP BRING THE ARTS TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS IN A
MEANINGFUL WAY.

Yours Truly,
nicole c. king
