I think that the artist is going to follow his or her own path of
interest regardless of their educational experience. Many artists, even
some of those who "draw realistically," were self taught. As an art
educator, I try to give my students a balanced set of experiences, within
the limited time frame, and to allow room for the truly interested to follow
their own direction.
I think there are principles in art that vary widely across time
periods and cultures which one can share with students, and devise helpful
exercises, to round out their backgrounds and to help them with the tools to
realize their visions, but the "artists" amongst my students are really
following their own interests and quickly become quite sophisticated in the
ideas and styles that they are pursuing, achieving "realism" is not a
problem. In a sense, that is the easiest aspect of their work to make
suggestions about, but understanding their ideas and helping to determine
the direction of the piece is, for me, the most challenging aspect of being
an art educator.
A thought to ponder: the writer, Vladimir Nabokov, stated that the
word "realism" could never be used without quotes.
