This past year I came back to teaching art after being away from it for a
while. My current district is far from ideal, but when I look at the big
picture of what I'm doing I still want to be where I am. I can see it as
half-full or half-empty, it is my choice. I love getting messy, and giving
students a chance to break away from the academic and move into the creative
and expressive experiences art can offer. I love exposing them to different
experiences. The challenges in my job just make life more interesting. The
students enrich my life, and I am a better person having worked with them.
I remember a student of mine, a 3rd grader named Roger. Roger was a kid who
was never completely clean, and everything he made was a wreck. One day we
completed a 3-D bird mask, as the students were leaving the room and he came
up to me and said, "doesn't it just make your tummy tingle when it looks
I want to help them get tingles in their tummies, and if I can do that with
$1.50 per kid for the year than I'm happy.
