Pat, Thank you for bringing this to everyone's attention. I found at
least 5 articles relating directly to this issue in today's Examiner/SF
Chron, and even our local ClearLake papers. Actually Fresno was held up
as some kind of forward looking icon in using "real" people to teach
"real" skills.
The issue of training all these people on the job was also mentioned,
but I don't think anyone outside of the profession really has a clue as
to what that entails. In my school alone, we are filling 10 vacancies
for the upcoming school year, {which starts in early August} and 6 of
them just earned their credential. This will put an incredible strain
on our returning teachers, who will be working overtime to bring all the
new folks up to speed. This is all happening when we are not doing the
class reduction trip.....can you imagine what will happen then? We are
replacing virtually one third of our teachers.
Other districts and schools in our poor, underpaid county are still
advertising for teachers and as is the case with poor rural counties in
California, the pickins are slim.
Do you, or anyone on the ArtsEdnet know of some good newsgroups where
this is being discussed? Any referrals will be greatly appreciated,
Thanks, Charlotte Griswold
