I would like to share a wonderful book with the group called, "Reviving
Ophelia- Saving the Selves of Adolescent Girls" by Mary Pipher, PH.D. I read
the book to gain some insight into my daughter's behavior. It has solved
some of my problems, but not all problems can be solved because of the
culture we live in. As I read the book, I realized how important it is for
educators to keep up with the times, and the issues of our culture. The book
would be an excellent tool in creating discussions for boys and girls. Some
questions to students might be, "Are girls treated equally in our society?"
"Does our culture send mixed messages to kids?",etc. The discussion would
make a nice lead-in for an expressive lesson or unit. Some of you have been
discussing Expressionism. I thought this might tie into what you have been
If any of you have read the book, I would love to hear your opinions. I
highly recommend this book to those of you who are parents. It has really
opened my eyes.
