When Ken wrote about the higher test scores and the correlation to
the study of the Arts, it reminded me of a site I visited earlier this year : (also its
links-particularly the one titled "national"). This is the site for the
Minnesota Alliance for the Arts. This past March, as part of Youth Art
Month, several of us (art teachers) made a presentation to our school board.
I had copied and handed out info posted on this site relating to the Scans
report and also a piece (which is unfortunately no longer on the site)
citing higher test scores on the SAT by students who had also taken Art or
Music in their high school years. We requested that the info be read by the
board, especially the education subcommittee, and drive future
decision-making. There are some very nice pieces tying the Arts to School to
Work-which is a big thrust in our district, but the info is varied and could
be cited in many situations in arguing for the Arts.
Best Wishes!
