This may be an interesting twist. There may be a case of a civilization
dying because of the arts. It has been said that the Roman population got
lead poisoning from the glazes of their ceramic stoneware that they ate out
of. Some say that this caused dementia of its citizens and lead to their
downfall as a nation. It was easy for an attacking country to defeat them
due to this weakness.

I do agree with you, however. Civilization comes from the word "civilized"
and to me a civilized country encourages expression in the arts. I came
across an interesting article this week. It said that there is a
correlation between better grades and test scores along with an education
in the arts.
