I believe that one of the answers to the many problems with IPS lies in the
arts. There are several current and former IPS art teachers (myself
included) on this list and I think we can all concur on the many problems
with this school district. I'm sure that these problems are common to
inner-city school districts.

Its difficult to teach when you are physically attacked, have to keep an
eye out for the pyromaniacs, rapes occuring in the hallways and bathrooms,
etc., etc. Shortridge Junior HIgh (now Middle School) with 1,400 students
had 6 art teachers and a $600 annual art budget when I was there. Since
then, they have cut the positions to 2. Without the arts, there may not be
any way to reach these troubled youths.
