I am quoting today's Indianapolis News in Indianapolis:
"Indianapolis Public Schools Superintendent Esperanza Zendejas will
recommend today the elimination of a least 125 art and physical education
teaching jobs for the fall of 1997 to stem a growing budget shortfall...."
"....I'm horrified," said an art teacher at School 49 who asked not to be
identified. "Ihave heard for years that they could lay off some teachers.
The children will not learn real art like they will with an art teacher."
"Board President Donald Payton said he will support the cuts but would like
more details. "This hurts, but tough choices have to be made. That's what
we're elected for."
