EXACTLY! I also endorse the use of the reproductions and the aforementioned
ways to discover meaning. My students are asked to solve the interesting
problem(s) that came up once we have arrived at meaning, and in a variety
of ways that they choose. The true "a ha!" comes when we have a final class
critique, share our writing and art, and look at the many ways the problem
was solved. Oh what we learn about each other and ourselves! I can't
emphasize enough though...encounters with original works of art, either
borrowed, your own, or on field trips. The difference that seeing an
original as opposed to a reproduction to kids is amazing.
