I have several suggestions for lessons using Adobe Illustrator. Adobe has
a good reference with "Classroom in a Pack" series. I had the good
fortune to receive a $96,000 grant from the state of LA. to initiate a
computer graphics program in the middle school classroom. After teaching
students how to use the mac and the software "Illustrator," we study
Picasso's Girl Before the Mirror -- looking and learning about patterns
(and how to make patterns with Illustrator) as well as learning the use
of symbolisms. There's several ways I
approach this -- one I make a template of "Girl Before the Mirror" and
students use the various tools (reflect, auto trace, pen, rotate, etc.) to
duplicate or alter the original painting. We then scan or input using the
canon 570 camera the students photographs of themselves. The templates
made from their own scans are used to create their own images of
themselves "before a mirror." First, we study portraiture and proportions
-- this concept is enhanced when they must use the template to create
their own features -- focusing on using the eye as a measuring tool. They
then add patterns, mirrors (the reflected image is their "inner self."),
etc. This project usually takes 3-4 weeks, depending on the number of
students in the class. I also have 35 students, in which case we break
down into groups -- when one group is at the computer, the other is in
multi-media -- drawing, painting, etc. Needless to say, it's a busy room,
and hairpulling at times, but worth it. Of course, this last year, I've
had only 15 students for the 15 computers, I definitely taught twice as
much in that class than in any other -- and student makeup was the same!
I've developed more plans using line drawings in Illustrator, landscapes,
etc. but they all have the same concept as the Picasso -- study of the
artist, template of selected work, duplication using computer tools,
finally a work based on student's own thought.
