Hi!
The discussion on language is very interesting. Art is a universal language
in some ways, but an understanding of one another's cultures can certainly be
enriched through being able to communicate in words as well as images. Those
of you struggling with this issue may want to take a look at _Contmporary Art
and Multicultural Education_ by Susan Cahan and Zoya Kocur. This book has
been recommended by others on this list previously -- in fact this is where I
first learned of it. The book has sections on second language support and
multilingualism as well as an annotated bibliography with a section on
Bilingual and Multicultural Education. The last third of the book contains a
series of lesson plans, the first five dealing with American Identity. Also
included are contemporary works of art with artists' statements in both
English and Spanish. I've read the book once, but think I've only skimmed the
surface of what's there. I haven't tried any of the lessons, but would be
interested in hearing from anyone who has.
