I have been a secondary art teacher for 9 years with LAUSD-and these
last two years have been especially difficult-
and it's not the kids!
I am sure many of you in LAUSD have felt the demoralizing effects of
budget cuts to the arts, layoffs at our schools,
and teacher bashing all over the media. The mood of uncertainty and
negativity is especially depleting to us all.
So after decompressing during the first few weeks of summer I had an
idea. Years ago while I was earning my Masters degree
and teaching credential in San Francisco, I worked as an artist in the
public schools through a program called Arts in Action.
For several years we did a faculty Art show-sometimes with our
student's work and sometimes without- and it was very well received by
the community and even received local media attention. I really liked
the way the show honored us as artists in our own right-not just as
and I think it enabled our students and the community to better see us
in that way too.
I would really like to do that same concept of an Art show here in Los
Angeles with other LAUSD art teachers who are interested.
This idea is in the extreme formative stages so feel free to jump on
board with all of your great brainstorming feedback and ideas!
