Last year someone donated rolls of thin foam backed vinyl. It was rather
substantail and heavy - the kind of material that might be used for
upholstery. I cut it to the exact size of every table. Students worked with
clay on these mats for three class periods and then wiped them off with sponges
at the end of each hour. At the end of my clay classes, I folded the table
covers, dusty sides together, to expose the now relatively clean tables for the
2-D classes. I have taught ceramics for 13 years, and this has been the best
solution ever.
