Connecting Collections
July 9–13, 2007

This weeklong program for teachers is a collaboration between MoMA,
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, and
the Whitney Museum of American Art. Working with modern and
contemporary art from each collection, this national institute
encourages educators to develop techniques for integrating the study
of visual images into their classrooms. Participants return to their
schools with the ability to create meaningful object-based learning
activities that can be integrated into a wide variety of curricula and
meet standards for student achievement.

 Connecting Collections: Integrating Modern and Contemporary Art into
the Classroom
MON JUL 9–FRI JUL 13, 10 AM–4 PM

The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon
R. Guggenheim Museum, and the Whitney Museum of American Art present a
summer institute for educators.

• Gain a deeper understanding of contemporary and modern art
• Learn object-based teaching strategies and receive feedback from
museum educators
• Work with small groups of peers to develop a unit plan integrating
art into a curriculum
• Develop engaging approaches for using works of art in the classroom
• Focus on the development of visual literacy skills
• Develop questioning techniques appropriate to works of art
• Receive curriculum materials and learn about museum resources
• Meet colleagues from around the country
• Explore exhibitions independently

Tuition is $400 and includes all instruction, curriculum materials,
and lunch each day. Teachers in grades 3–12 for all subject areas are
welcome to apply. Enrollment is limited to forty participants.

Previous participants may not reapply to the program.

Completed applications must be received by May 14, 2007.

Participants are responsible for their own lodging and transportation
to each location.

of American Art presents a comprehensive in-depth institute for 3rd
through 12th grade educators. Through observation, analysis, and
interpretation of modern and contemporary art, educators develop
techniques for integrating the study of visual images into their
classroom curricula. This week-long professional development seminar
includes guided tours, lectures by leading scholars in the field of
education, research projects, and curriculum planning. Graduate credit
is available.
