We are adopting the new Gardner text - extensively re-written (Art
Through the Ages). It is the most accessible text we have found
after using Stockstad for several years, and before that Laurie
Adams. Both are excellent texts, but for students with NO
background in art - college age - the new Gardner respects newbies
to art history. NOT boring. Suggest you get desk copies and see
what you think. It is also the lightest weight (in pounds) and the
thinnest. Anyone have the new Janson?Beautiful and wonderful for
advanced students or art majors. Most of my students have only been
to the Museum of Natural History. Few have been to an art museum.
Lucky to be in NYC and Brooklyn because the Brooklyn Museum is a
treasure. They let my students spread out on the floor and draw (it
is very uncrowded - and unappreciated. I'd rather visit the Egyptian
galleries in Brooklyn than those at the Met),and the guards are
really sweet looking at their work and commenting, the docents are
excellent, and the museum has the new galleries for women's art
with a permanent installment of The Dinner Party, finally giving it
a home. Jane in Brooklyn
