Renaming the image is the best way to end the linking unless the
people doing the hotlinking come back to your page to get the new
filename,

I like the idea set out in the article you mentioned of creating an
image file saved wiht the same name of the file that everyone was hot
linking to. That image could be of text that says don't hotlink and
steal my bandwith.
